Multi-contextual Journey of Addiction Recovery featured panelists

Each human being experiences the world with a unique lens, built with various identities and circumstances. Adults across the lifespan living with substance use disorder may also live with chronic medical conditions, co-occurring mental health disorders, housing insecurities, etc. This event consists of a multidisciplinary panel of addiction specialists from public health, outpatient, and community-based settings. The panel will provide expertise in addiction across the lifespan in micro, mezzo, and macro arenas.

Bhumi Aryal '16G, MSW LCSW Panelists:

Bhumi Aryal '16G, MSW LCSW is an alumnus of Salem State University’s School of Social Work. He also holds another master’s degree at Tribhuvan University in Nepal. Mr. Aryal is currently a program director at Living and Recovery Community (LARC) and a Psychiatric Social Worker at Mass General Brigham and Women Hospital’s Emergency Department. He has extensive experience as a trauma-informed clinician specializing in substance use disorder and co-occurring disorders. 

 

 

 

 

 Marc Bell, LADCII


Marc Bell, LADCII has been an addiction counselor at the Shattuck Hospital since 2004. He has a background in working with patients with co-occurring disorders involved with court and individuals experiencing homeless. From 1990 to 2001, he worked with the Boston health Care for the Homeless and BMC, formerly known as Boston City Hospital. During the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Mr. Bell did outreach, education and counseling work with high risk populations in the Boston area.

 

 

Mariah Bundy, MPAS, PA-C

 

Mariah Bundy, MPAS, PA-C is a certified Physician Assistant that completed her education at MGH Institute of Health Professions. Currently, she provides care as a hospitalist at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital under the Department of Public Health. She primarily works with the underserved, low socioeconomic population, including patients with substance use disorder and Tuberculosis. She is happy to be at Salem State University to discuss the medical implications of substance use disorder.

 

 

 

 

Jeff Lyons '16, MSW LCSW

 

Jeff Lyons '16, MSW LCSW is an alumnus of Salem State University’s School of Social Work and received his MSW from Simmons University. Currently, he is a Clinical Social Worker at the Department of Public Health’s Shattuck Hospital and an emergency services clinician responding to psychiatric emergencies in the community. Additionally, Mr. Lyons has a background in community-based practice and in-home therapy.

 

 

 

Danielle L. Owen LICSW LADCI


Danielle L. Owen LICSW LADCI is a Clinical social worker working in an integrated primary care (outpatient) setting at the DPH Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain. She is a graduate of Salem State and Hazelden (European) School of Addiction with over 22 years of substance use disorder clinical experience, both in Ireland and Massachusetts. Danielle has a background in supporting troubled youth and traumatized immigrant adults, addressing behavioral health, interpersonal violence, health access & literacy issues. Her work in recent years in MA has been, increasingly, addressing the needs of a diverse population of adults and older adults struggling with opiate use disorders, many who receive support with medication treatments (Buprenorphine, Vivitrol, Methadone). Danielle has become more focused on the importance of gender responsive care within this milieu, utilizing a trauma focused lens and culturally sensitive approach. Danielle's social work practice is influenced by Judith Herman, who says "Recovery can take place only within the context of relationship”.
